A Little Bit About Me...

How do I summarize teaching in my life? I guess the best way to explain my teaching experience is to tell you a story. As a young girl I wanted to be a teacher. Because of my love of learning I taught all my siblings how to read. I know it is pretty funny but it is a true story. That led to my doing teaching seminars, which led to consulting, which led to training, which led to my working with individuals as a life coach. I have been a CEO, Vice President, Consultant, Senior Broker, Artist, Photographer, Glass Blower, Jewelry Designer and writer, the job titles have changed over the years; the only consistent has been that teaching has always been a part of my working life.

As a student and teacher of history, I have had the pleasure of working both in the classroom and in large, nationally recognized museum education departments. As an historian of a variety of subjects, I have extensive experience in research, working with primary and secondary sources and materials, project presentations in various formats, and writing and editing essays, magazine articles, and research papers, marketing materials. I have been a judge for several years at the state's History Day student competition, and have worked as a substitute teacher in the local schools. I have taught many different students from all types of backgrounds, from gifted to learning disabled. The reason I have success with these students is because I make learning fun and relevant. I develop creative tools that are of interest to that particular student, while cultivating a great deal of empathy. This is based on getting to know the family the child is a member of. I started out working as a Head Start teacher's assistant and the following year I was promoted to Head Start teacher and manager. I have also worked as a 1:1 instructional assistant with a high needs student. Currently I worked in a behavior school as an instructional assistant, and I have stepped in to plan curriculum and teach all the classes because the teacher has been on paid leave this year. I also have been commuting to college in Castleton State College from Springfield after work to complete my degree in education. I have been able to keep my GPA at a 3.8 which I believe demonstrates my ability to multitask effectively.
