I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.
I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.

Before obtaining my bachelor’s degree, I taught a four-year old preschool class. While I was working on my degree I volunteered as a tutor for the local elementary school. I have been trained through the Alabama Reading Initiative(ARI) and recertified with (ARI). I have been trained in Alabama Math, Science, Technology Initiative(AMSTI). I have also been a part of Partner in Education tutoring with parents and their children to help parents know how to help their child become better readers. I have taught all subjects in second and third grade. I have been teaching for 12 years in my field of elementary education.

I began my college experience as a biology major. During my studies I found that my true love was not in the field of biology, it was in the field of teaching.
