I love being with children and working with them. It thrills me when I see the “light” click on. I know that given the opportunity, resources, and guidance every child can learn. I want to be a part of providing that for children. I also know that working in small group or one on one provides children a better opportunity of learning. I also believe that there are many learning styles instruction should meet the individual child’s learning style. My goal is to reach each child where he/she is and help them to grow in knowledge and ability. I work to help them reach their full potential and to become life long learners.

More About This Tutor...

I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.
I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that every child can learn. My job as a teacher and tutor/mentor is to discover which way will work best with each student. I am very patient and easy going. I believe in a reward system for all students. If students have something to work towards earning, then they are more likely to work harder at achieving their goal. I believe that I can and will make a difference in your child's life.

I have always had a strong desire to learn and to teach. I work hard and I am diligent to complete a task. My joy is to work with children of any age to help them grow and develop and learn. I believe it takes love, grace and patience to teach a child. The student must not only be expected to learn from the tutor, but the tutor must also learn from the student. Learning can be made enjoyable when a teacher has an encouraging spirit and does not give up on their student. I believe that any child's capacity to learn is no different than my capacity to learn, however his or her learning style may be different than mine. I desire to teach and learn and to positively impact my student's life.
I have a BA in Philosophy/Religious Studies and I also studied Environmental Science with over 40 credit hours. Due to this wide range of studies, I have strong skills in both reading and writing, ... read more

My teaching style is relaxed, but consistent and firm. I expect assignments to be completed and timely, and spend the time with the student instructing and revising. I ask that parents are a part of the experience. I like to communicate with the family frequently so that they are aware of the assigned tasks and they can make me aware of the student's feelings and needs. It is my opinion that when the family, the teacher/tutor and the student are working together toward a given set of goals and objectives the growth is expedited.

I began teaching with students who required a significant amount of intervention to succeed on their grade level. While I was in Atlanta I also worked with the after school tutoring program for at-risk students. After my year in Atlanta I returned home and began teaching Special Education in Mobile County, where I also worked with the county in an after school program tutoring students who required more intervention. I left Mobile county to move to Baldwin county where I taught for three years. As part of the Baldwin county system I went through the training to become an ARI and AMSTI teacher. Once I became an ARI and AMSTI trained teacher I then used the principles and techniques of the two initiatives in my own classroom.

Coming from a family of educators, I knew from an early age that I would become a teacher myself; therefore, all the steps taken to prepare for my professional life have been to enable me to be the best teacher I can be. I received both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of South Alabama. I received classroom teaching experience at a local middle school and as a university instructor. I currently have an extremely rewarding position with the Mobile Housing Board developing, coordinating, and instructing GED preparation classes. With this program I teach GED concepts and both group and individually tutor numerous students. I take pride in the fact that 100% of the students I referred to the official GED test obtained their GED. Unfortunately, the grant I work under has expired, and I will now explore more opportunities in the world of education.
