My style is relaxed, but focused, with a touch of humor to ease nerves. The first step is creating comfort and trust between the student and the tutor. To do this, when coaching Chemistry, I would have the student present a problem. Then, I'd say, well, let's figure this out together. And, truly, that is what we would do, step by step, by asking questions. What do we know? What do we need to figure out? Essentially showing them the thought process out loud, and involving them in obtaining the solution. This approach helps develop confidence. Repeating creates familiarity. I approach teaching as a challenge; as I know not every student learns the same way. I first start by finding a common ground; a level of knowledge if you will. Essentially I find what they know and where do they need help. From there I like to find out something the student has an interest in; thus allowing me to relate subjects to something they find interesting. Students learn better when they see the relevance of the material they are studying to their own lives. In many subject areas this relevance is not obvious, and students may tune out as a result. I always use concrete examples that students can relate to when explaining a concept. For example, when discussing paternalism with college students I will often cite government regulation of tobacco and alcohol use to illustrate how the concept translates into laws that directly affect them.
