A Little Bit About Me...

I have two bachelors degrees, however, I believe it is my experience teaching children that has helped me develop a good sense on how to approaching teaching scenarios. I have years of experience teaching children in academics, music, and dramatic arts, as well as coaching basketball and teaching golf at the professional level.
Each child is different. I always try to notice and acknowledge what benefits each student, as I think this applies to all forms of teaching from academics to athletics. Getting on their level is what ultimately benefits the child from the get go and gains their interest. If I'm interested, then the child is interested. I do my best to make sure the child is setting their goals and doing their best to achieve them in the way and style for which they are best suited.

My teaching style is different with each child. Some need more encouragement that others, more supervision, while others do better with an overview explanation followed by "hand off" approach, allowing their creative minds to think of the solution. I like to use practical applications wherever possible. One time, I was working with an 11 year old on fractions. With her parent's permission, I asked her to my home to help me make chocolate chip cookies. I deliberately did not use the "easy" measuring spoons or cups - I used the ones that forced her to figure out how many of a certain fraction would equal one whole. She did very well - and we enjoyed some wonderful cookies.

In addition to a B.A. in History and an M.A. in Legal studies, I completed (with an A for all) the 21 credit hours in education courses required to teach secondary education in Maryland. I then earned scores in the above-average range on all three sections of PRAXIS I: Academic Skills Assessments and recently passed the PRAXIS Social Studies Content Knowledge.

A Little Bit About Me...

I took Spanish throughout elementary, middle, and high school. I then took two Spanish courses in college. I've travelled to Latin America on four occasions and did fieldwork for my MA dissertation in Spanish. My level of spoken and written Spanish is high enough for tutoring at lower to intermediate levels. I spent 10 months in Brussels, Belgium. While living there I shared a flat with two native French speakers. I also took private French lessons for 5 months. I was also able to carryout day to day activities such as getting/giving directions, shopping at the grocery store, and going to the laundromat using my French.
