My philosophy of discipline is simple: observe, take data and find the function of the behavior. When a student misbehaves in class there is an underlying reason. Every behavior has a function. The function can be to gain access to an item or person, to avoid doing the work or aggressive behaviors if they do not understand the assignment completely, medicine or personal affects (hungry, sleepy or thirsty). I also believe in “brain breaks”. My students take a break every hour to get up, walk around, listen to music and get the wiggles out. By doing this one simple trick, they are able to concentrate better and have an opportunity to get the wiggles out. I also have “my time versus your time”. I worked for 12 years as a Special Education teacher in the public school system, teaching students with ADD, learning disabilities, autism, Aspergers, emotional and behavior disorders, and mild intellectual disabilities in a resource room and inclusion setting. I am able to quickly make significant connections with the students, building the good rapport that is essential to achieving a good working relationship. I especially enjoy working with reluctant and struggling readers, and nothing makes me happier than to see them overcome the obstacles that have kept them from success.

During college, I swam varsity, an experience that taught me the patience and time management required to balance a rigorous academic schedule with the physical strain of a full-time sport. Later, I found that my personality and ability to work well with others was more helpful out of the water. During my 4th year, I coached the club swim team, and then moved up to assistant coaching the varsity team during my 5th year. I was able to understand the difficulties students were having and helped them with their work as well as helping them manage their schedules. I love teaching and engaging with people of all ages. Everyone learns in a different way, and it is kind of exciting to see how people think and try to connect with them. I believe that it is possible for anyone to learn; some people just have to take a different approach to get to their objective. I love the entire learning and teaching process, and I am pretty fond of people as well!
I can be helpful in math up through Algebra II, and have extensive knowledge of counseling, religious studies, writing, and have used accounting a bit in bookkeeping. I could tutor social studies up through high school because I have found such a great overlap between religion and counseling and human services.
