As a biochemistry student at University of the Pacific, I was required to know the science so well that even if a random person on the street asks me a question, I would be able to explain it to him/her in a way that they could understand. My students often say I can’t be a teacher because they “just get it" when I explain. Even so, my degree is in math and I've taught professionally and privately. I have a history of maintaining high scores and would rather show why something works than how to follow steps. I don't expect students to love math or do it "my way" but I want students to know math isn't scary.
