Helping children work through learning issues is my passion.

When working from my office, I like to use hands on activities that keep children engaged. However, since working online I use many different websites and materials that allow children to be actively engaged. I use Orton Gilligham and Wilson reading programs as well as my own materials. A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching social studies in Cabarrus County for the past 12 years. I am nationally board certified and have my AP certification in World History. This summer I will be receiving my IB training and will begin teaching AP world history in the IB classroom. For nine years I taught at the elementary level in private schools. I taught some inclusive classes and developed plans for my students to succeed. Identifying a student's learning style and giving them the tools to progress gave them the ability and confidence to do well. Turning your weakness into your strength

I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"
I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.

When tutoring students I try to take a multidimensional approach. I attempt to show the child, explain it in my own words, have the student explain it in his/her own words, and then have them apply and practice so that the material really sticks.

A Little Bit About Me...

Once I have an understanding of what a student is capable of I like to push them to go past their "comfort zone" in learning. It helps them understand that what may look difficult, may not always be so and that they only way to find out is to learn it. Also, I do not teach study habits. Instead I like to see what a students current habits are and work on expanding those habits so that the child does not get frustrated and overwhelmed. It is easier to learn more from current knowledge than try to teach a whole new way. After all, most students study habits are based on how their teacher has taught them, and I wouldn't go against what the teacher has taught.
