I have had experience tutoring and teaching Algebra I and II from a being a teacher. I feel very comfortable with all types of math. I have worked in small and large group environments to one-on-one. From the engineering background, I have insight into real world uses for math. While working as an engineer, I taught skiing and group fitness class, two very diverse groups of people to work with. From those experiences I decided to switch career paths to math teaching. I have tutored off and on while getting the math education degree. A Little Bit About Me...

I have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Brigham Young University with a 3.95 GPA in my math courses. I was top of my class in all my math classes and regularly tutored my classmates on the homework assignments. I also was in the mathematics graduate program for a year and a half. During this time I taught algebra, trigonometry, and calculus courses at Brigham Young University. I performed all the duties of a professor. I gave lectures, held office hours, graded homework, wrote and administered tests, personally tutored students and assigned final grades.

A Little Bit About Me...

I did my internship at Springville High School and Dixon Middle School. At Dixon I was selected to help teach adults about the computer. I have 9 children. I was able to teach each of them. Some of them have gone on to higher education and have scholarships. I still have some at home and enjoy teaching them.
I like the tutoring environment because I like seeing individual progress. It is easier to assess where the child is. I believe that the basics are essential to moving forward in education. Memorization of math facts makes it easier for a child to learn new material because he isn't bogged down. I don't believe enough emphasis is placed on arithmetic in today's schools. Basic arithmetic skills make story problems easier. Types of story problems need to be practiced, not just thrown in at the end of a chapter without much information on how to do it. My teaching style is flexible depending upon the needs of my student(s). Some students have disabilities that make drilling or repetition styles of teaching and tutoring difficult and tiresome, while other thrive on it. Others need hands on learning opportunities and problems to work through on their own. Regardless of the student’s need, I am a tenacious teacher. If one method does not seem to be working, I will keep trying until I find the right method for the student I am teaching or tutoring.
Throughout my undergraduate studies at BYU, I taught and tutored in Spanish for up 24 hours each week. I earned my Degree at BYU-Idaho where I majored in Math and minored in Health. While in college I taught some lower level math classes. I went on to work at a year round school working with troubled teens. I was able to learn many different teaching strategies to work with different personalities.
I have been able to develop a great teacher-student relationship of mutual respect and trust. I like to get to know the students learning style so I can adjust my teaching strategy to better fit them. I think it is important to create a situation where the student can feel successful, which will improve their confidence in learning.
