I am a stickler for proper sentence structure, grammar, and spelling; I believe that a command of written English can open doors in life which appeared previously to be intractably sealed, and can create either employment or advancement opportunities which might not otherwise have been possible. After graduating in 1996, I opened my own tutoring service in Dickson, TN. I tutored individuals from public schools and home school in Math, Reading, and several other subjects needed until 2001. At this time I left Dickson and moved to Clarksville, TN and tutored with A+ Math tutoring intil 2006. Seeing the look and smile on the face of a student that finally grasps a concept, or realizes they have just read on their own for the first time, OH What a Feeling!!! I have earned both an AS in Science and Mathematics as well as completed all requirements for my BA in business administration with a concentration in accounting. I have volunteered at an elementary school tutoring while I was in high school. I have also tutored individuals in college level material on a private basis for compensation. My primary strength is mathematics although I am quite skilled in English as well. I have always possessed a love of helping others to learn. It brings me great joy to witness when an individual grasps a concept which they have been having difficulty with. I tend to use a demonstrator style of teaching by first working through a problem slowly while asking the student questions to ensure that they understand what I am doing. After twenty-five years in book and magazine publishing, I decided to do something that mattered, so I went back to school, got a master's degree, and began teaching. I've been teaching college English for the last ten years, as well as writing poetry -- some of which gets published. I also tutor students in how to write their college application essays. I've published poetry, a novel, short stories, and a short collection of essays. Writing is thinking. If I can get my students to think, I can get them to write better. We sit down with interesting texts, thought-provoking texts, and figure out what the author was trying to say and how. Then we try to do the same thing ourselves.
