A Little Bit About Me...

I have somewhat a charismatic style of teaching in that I can quickly get excited when I'm teaching. When I teach, I am very organized and have a firm grip on I'm trying to relay across to my students, because I feel that one of the worse things a tutor can do to a student is to get up to teach and sound as if he or she doesn't know what they are talking about. I am person who expects a lot of the people I tutor as so I would hope they expect a lot from me as well. I encourage students to always to do their best and never accept anything less of that. My teaching style is probably best suited to high school and college students. Although I successfully helped my own 3 children through their elementary school, high school and college years, my tutoring experience has been with older students. My wife is a Montessori trained teacher so I have absorbed that method for tutoring. Each student must be viewed as an individual to define the areas of weakness and fill them in. It is only when the student understands the basics of a subject that they can build a future in it.

My experience as a teacher has shown me the importance of an open mind and a thoughtful response. I believe learning comes out of asking questions. It is the instructor's job to encourage thoughtful questions. To do this, the student must be made to feel at ease around the teacher and confident enough to ask the questions they really need answered to succeed. If a student is ridiculed for asking a "stupid" question there is less chance of that student asking questions in the future and less chance of the student succeeding in a course.

Making school awesome for students is challenging, but it is something that gives me a lot of satisfaction. Before I begin teaching, I create several goals and strategies to make it clear what I expect and what direction we want to go. I emphasize that as long as they give it a 100% effort, they will do well. I use as many teaching tools as possible. I like math because it's all about building off of fundamentals. Once a person has a good hold of the fundamentals, they can begin to apply them to more complicated problems. I find the best way to build up the fundamentals is to relate it to the student in some way. Once the material is related, the student is better able to focus and concentrate, which allows for a quicker and more firm grasp of the subject matter.
As a graduate from the Oregon Institute of Technology I have had an in depth education in math, physics, and electronics with a healthy supply of technical writing. While in school I was able to help other fellow students in their math classes, much as I did when I was in high school. This experience, coupled with growing up in a house with two teachers for parents, has helped me obtain a useful teaching style.
