A Little Bit About Me...

I am a higher education professional who has come to believe that the best way to impact students is to return to teaching. I have a long-standing interest in the philosophy of teaching. I am particularly impressed by "deep learning," a movement that emphasizes critical thinking and inquiry at all levels of teaching. I also believe in high expectations combined with a strong support system, and a common sense approach to the subject matter. I have come to believe that much "teaching" is nothing more than giving students the illusion that they have learned something; this is evidenced by the "cram and regurgitate" approach often taken by students. In my view, this approach is not true teaching or true learning.

I have always loved teaching and tutoring. Whether it is friends, family, children, or college students, the potential to learn present in anyone has always astounded me. Through encourgment, repetition, and practicallity anyone is capable of learning under a caring teacher. From past tutoring experiences, I have discovered that all people have the ability to learn, but each person learns in their own way. My tutoring method is a direct reflection of the way in which I was taught. Asking questions is strongly encouraged, and I work to help students answer their own questions rather than simply providing the solution. I am also a firm believer that visualizing a problem and/or breaking it down into smaller segments enhances the learning experience and promotes long-term knowledge retention.
