A Little Bit About Me...

Although I have recently graduated with a degree in business, I am interested in pursuing a career involving people. My previous employment was a sales position that was very customer-oriented. I also have 3 years of experience helping children by teaching swimming lessons. Assisting my 15-year-old sister with her school work is also a regular activity.

Teaching is a wonderful experience! My teaching style is laid-back, I'd say. I like having conversations in order to determine how someone learns. I think people learn best when discussing the material and really think it out before they start creating something. Guiding a student down the path of their own learning style is important because they will need those skills in the future when they go off to college or start a career on their own. When considering my teaching style, it is difficult to explain a single process for teaching. When working with different people it is important to remain creative, inventive, and patient. Every person has different learning styles and it is important to recognize in that person what helps them understand more fully. Whether it is diagram and pictures, breaking a complex problem into many simple parts, comparing similar examples that are familiar to the person, or simply taking the time to make sure that the child feels comfortable saying "I don't know". All of these are useful tools, but in my opinion by far the most important is patience. Remaining patient when someone doesn't understand is the absolute most important thing. Too many children are willing to give up on a subject, all they need is someone who knows they can do it, and can show them how.

A Little Bit About Me...

My experience tutoring Math and Science is extensive. I started formally tutoring Chemistry in 1996 as a chemistry tutor. Throughout my Bachelor's and Master's degrees I tutored students independently. This helped me develop a wider range of approaches with which to help different students learn. I am well versed in many different mathematical disciplines. I am familiar with everything from arithmetic to graduate level mathematics and statistics. I am also familiar with many areas in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at the freshman level.
My teaching approach varies depending on the student. With youth, I am both patient and focused. I am also considerate and easy going. As the student gets older, I let them dictate what they would like to learn and the intensity they would like to learn it at. I respect students of all ages and I am always attentive to their needs.
