English Tutoring for Foreigners! Can speak Chinese!

I try to use a variety of materials that are both interesting and effective to learning how to speak authentic English. I encourage students to use their English at every opportunity and, when learning, to learn things in context, and not as some isolated phrase or word that may be harder to remember.
I taught English to preschool-age students and elementary school students abroad for a period of about 5 months and learned a lot in that short time. I also can speak Mandarin Chinese at lower intermediate level and lived in China for over 2 years. I graduated with a BS in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. During my college experience at the University of Arizona, I have participated in two programs that allowed me to teach a wide variety of students of different backgrounds and different ages. I have worked with children as young as four years to 16 years of age. I taught Science-based lessons (Entomology and Marine Discovery). Also,I have tutored high school students in English and different levels of Math. A Little Bit About Me...

I do not believe in hierarchy. I think the teacher-student or tutor-student relationship should be one of equal footing and mutual discovery. This means asking questions together and seeking out the fundamental answers to questions. I think all children and adults deserve a place to learn about themselves and the world around them where they are free to ask any question and challenge any assumption. This does not mean I am a push over and cannot create structure in a lesson. I just strive to do it in a way that does not discourage creativity and authentic discovery about themselves and the world.
