More About This Tutor...

As an adjunct faculty instructor at the University of North Alabama, I teach students in a public speaking course through a series of class lectures, individual and group activities, live performances, examinations, and out of class assignments. I work on skills such as audience and situational analysis, research, organization, delivery, body language, and listening. My goal is to make my students more at ease with public speaking by teaching them how to be successful at it in a variety of situations. My activities and assignments are meant to challenge their critical thinking skills while improving their performance skills and help me to offer more individualized instruction. While teaching 9th grade world history in Haleyville, I covered the time period from roughly 1500 to present. I taught them about the rise out of the “dark ages” and world exploration, the Renaissance and ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always wanted to be a teacher. I began tutoring while I was still in high school. I earned my BS in Elementary Education in 1980. I have tutored students of all ages in different subjects. Most of my tutoring experience has been in math and reading. I have tutored students for all sections of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam. I have been a homebound and home-school teacher, as well as a classroom teacher.
I love to help children learn! It is so rewarding to see the reaction of a child who suddenly understands what he has been trying to learn. I try to help my students build confidence in themselves by helping them realize that they do have the ability to learn. I want every child to know he is loved and special.

Teaching is my passion. Students need to be challenged, engaged, and eager to learn which is fueled by the enthusiasm of the teacher. I recognize that not every student in my classroom learns in the same manner. Various teaching methods need to be combined so that students have the opportunity to learn in multiple ways. The more opportunities that are available for a student to learn, the more valuable the education becomes for the student. Therefore, the most successful teaching technique is one that involves a variety of different methods where relevance is the umbrella in order to accommodate every student's unique learning style and needs inside and outside of the classroom.
As a special education teacher, I am highly motivated to see all students succeed both inside and outside of the classroom setting. I have earned a bachelor degree in Political Science with a minor in Histo ... read more

More About This Tutor...

My experience ranges a great deal and encompasses a lot of subject matter from K-12 Math to English and Literature. My wide range of expertise is indicative of my schooling where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications that exposed me to the Liberal Arts world; while my minor in Industrial and Systems Engineering and Master of Science degree in Information Technology exposed me to more technical subject matter (i.e. various levels of Math). I have had the privilege of tutoring approximately 5 clients in the span of roughly 2 years and each one under my tutelage boasted significant performance improvement in subject areas they found initially challenging.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate of the University of Louisville I feel I have developed a knowledge base to further my career. I earned a BA in a subject that I greatly enjoy to study, History. Within the arts I was able to focus on humanities and cultural interaction. Along with these classes I took many general courses to broaden my focus beyond my degree. Most of my college career I was reading, researching, and writing papers that furthered my written communication skills. During the last three years I have worked in a leadership/teacher role to help people develop their knowledge base.
In school I took a class that taught us that everyone learns in a different way. Just like how everyone sees things from different perspectives. After taking that class I realized that there is not just one way to teach or learn. I feel learning should be educational but fun. Repetition is also important. These a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style depends entirely on the student. With patients and flexibility, a teacher can provide a student with the desire to learn on their own. With guidance, that student can remain motivated and willing to seek his or her own answers. It is important to me to impart that desire, because it aids the student in all further endeavors. I also enjoy playing to student’s strengths to motivate them. One example is a young boy who had difficulty counting past eleven. He enjoyed art, and drawing though, and through intertwining the two he grew to enjoy math as well.
History has taught me various skills and understandings that other fields may lack. Not only do I have excellent writing and reading skills, I am apt at thinking analytically. Also, my research skills are strong, regardless of the subject. I have also spent three years studying German in order to grasp the language an ... read more

I think educators must take into account the different ways in which students learn. For instance, I've noticed that math students may have difficulty adding and subtracting fractions, but have no trouble whatsoever when I ask about dimes and quarters. If an instructor can build a bridge between new material and material the student has already mastered, t ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In many ways, learning can be customized to fit the individual interests of students, and I challenge myself to make each session one filled with new ideas and topics. I believe that the combination of hobbies and personal interests, along with the subject matter is the key to learning. While focusing on science, I strive to introduce other related topics and probe for what each student is interested in. Further, I believe in teaching through learning. Students love to express their own ideas about science, math, and civics, and through challenging these ideas, a teacher can instruct, while simultaneously empowering the student.

I love teaching and working with all children. Being a special educator, I focus my teaching style towards the needs of the student. I am available to help your child find academic success. I am patient, easy going, and considerate. My goal is to provide the best education possible. I believe in multicultural education which is the acceptance of all students from diverse backgrounds given equal status and accommodations to build on their learning modality. Some students are auditory learners, some learn better visually like myself, some are kinesthetic or tactile learners who need more hands on activities. I believe all children can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings and learning experiences.

I was educated at UAB for a degree in Political Science and English. My English and grammar skills are impecable. I also obtained an MBA from UAB though my greatest business experience was actually working as a banker for fifteen years. I have a passion for helping youth through my church and have four daughters of my own.
I believe in teaching something until I see the "light come on". I don't take their word for it that they understand it. They must demonstrate to me that they understand it by working through the most difficult problems in the area that I am instructing.
