I like to get to know the students. People learn different ways and at different paces. I am able to adapt to their individual styles. I go slowly and explain things both verbally and visually if necessary.
When I was in high school, I was in a program where I tutored new students. They were students who were struggling with their grades, and I was able to help them. Students must be challenged, not coddled. Students at all levels need to be pushed to find their limits and then move beyond them. Only then can they achieve real growth. We must use education as a tool to educate the next generation not only for employment but also for citizenship. In so doing, we need to take into account historical precedents and objective reality. Our students need more than simply reading comprehension and basic math skills. One of the chief contributions we can make to our students is teaching critical thinking.
