A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with children and helping them discover their individual learning style. I believe all children can learn but that we each have our individual strengths. I beleive that discovering ties to students pre-existing knowledge is the key to getting their intrest in a subject. Students learn best when they feel safe and understood. I work hard to understand my student's needs and help them discover their strengths.
I have taught and tutored K-12 subjects English, Basic Math, History, and Science for three years as an Educational Specialist helping home school students. For the past three years I have taught in Utah Elementary schools in the primary grades. My favorite job of all time was teaching ESL in a middle school. I have earned two bachelor degrees, BS in Philosophy and BS in Horticulture Management. I also have two minors, Business and Logic. I have worked as a Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant throughout my undergraduate education. I have presented my research at a conference in New York. Exceptional communicator with extensive professional experience training organizational representatives at various levels as well as volunteer experience mentoring at-risk youth.
I carefully organize before presenting. I anticipate what questions will need to be addressed. I enjoy seeing others learn. It is very important to me that my students do not become frustrated, but that they continue to keep trying even when it is difficult.

A Little Bit About Me...

I've never met a "stupid" student. I see all people as capable, as long as they are willing. I find it easy to get a student interested in a subject when they have usually been bored in class. I easily create metaphors and practical examples for application of the subject at hand so the student can personalize their studies. Once a student sees how the subject "fits" in their life, their interest level often changes.
With a Master's degree in counseling, I have had various experience working with youth on a clinical level. Before going into counseling I was on track to become a high school math teacher. I believe above all that patience is key in teaching people of all ages. If the teacher's listening and communication skills are focused on the individual(s) being taught, the learner will let the teacher know when they are grasping and/or absorbing new material as well as when they(the student) reach their capacity. I believe that in learning it's important to pace one's self, allow the mind time to digest new material, and in finding areas of learning that spark passion. I have taught undergraduate and graduate courses for over 20 years. I have a PhD in Business Administration with an emphasis in business statistics and operations management. I also have an MBA and an ME and BS in Mechanical Engineering. I have tutored students in all topics related to quantitative analysis and management.
Learning is the most natural thing for humans to do. We all come into this world with the desire and capacity to learn. We learn through exploration, questioning and discovery. A teacher’s role is to guide students in a process of discovery about the world and about themselves. I emphasize mastery, not “covering the material”. Just going through the book does not make an education. Mastering new skills, relevant to making better decisions in life, makes an education.
