A Little Bit About Me...

I volunteer for HOBY (Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar) every year. This program pushes facilitation, which is what I strive to do. I like to try to facilitate and push my students to ask questions and talk to me as a peer. I always try to give at least three compliments to every criticism because students are often too hard on themselves. For some reason, most of the students I have worked with have had an English teacher along the line who has made them feel "stupid." It is amazing what boosting confidence can do! When working towards my teaching certification I was in many classrooms from Kindergarten to 12th Grade in Pueblo School District 60. After graduation I applied and got a teaching job and I taught at Skyview Middle School in District 49 for 4 years teaching Ancient Civilizations. Before that I was a substitute in District 8, 2, 3, 60, 48 all southern Colorado school districts.
I am a holistic teacher who likes for students to experience the subject. For example I would have student immerse themselves into the subject of history and complete a project and present it to the other students. It was really successful and had students waiting all year.

Three teachers impacted my life not only as a result of the content of their classes but in their delivery. All three approached learning as an adventure. Even though the topics ranged from sixth grade mathematics to fluid dynamics each teacher keyed their presentation on the reception of the students. If the first presentation didn’t get the topic across an alternative presentation was made, often in a humorous vein. Students were never allowed to feel inadequate. Many of the students I trained were sent by their employers. So often, the student’s frame of mind wasn’t the most open to the learning experience. A Little Bit About Me...

I have found that no matter how much anyone person would like to teach, no one can force someone to learn. With that in mind, if I remember to approach each student as an individual with his or her own abilities, concerns, and goals, I will have a more successful result as an educator. The students do the work but you are the one who reaches their inner core to pull out their ability to achieve. For each student you must find what motivates them and press those buttons.
