I prefer to let the student explain what they understand and then identify what they are struggling with in order to avoid wasting time covering issues that they are proficient in to ensure that the student gets the most out of the time.
I have completed over 22 years of school, including 3 degrees. Along the way, I have been required to take multiple standardized tests in order to achieve admission into both the schools and my profession and have perfected the skills of preparing for and taking standardized tests. I spend much of time making the student understand that it is okay to feel behind in a subject and that the student should believe in himself. This belief is built on continued practice on fundamentals that I watch them go through but only ask questions when I see them going astray. Everyone needs to learn the material for his or herself.
