My educational philosophy includes the belief that all students are able to learn, but they must be active participants in their own learning--they must be engaged. From my time as a reading tutor to struggling readers in middle school, I understand the importance of first assessing a student's abilities in basic literacy (phonemic awareness, letter sounds and blending, concepts of print, recall & comprehension, etc.). I believe that every child deserves an equal opportunity at receiving a good education. Although each child may pursue differnet educational opportunities in later years, I believe that there is a core body of knowledge, presented to us in the curriculum, that each can and should be exposed to while they are in the lower. However, I realize that all children do not learn new concepts and strategies by the same methods or at the same rate as one another.
