I can teach beginner though intermediate. I opened my own studio in 2003. I teach children through adults on piano, keyboard, flute and voice. I graduated in 2011 with a BA in Music with a minor in Art History. I have gone to workshops with Musikgarten. In 2012 my son graduated from University of Md- Baltimore county with a BA in Music and joined my studio. He teaches violin, viola, steel drum and drums. I believe that anyone can learn regardless of age. I teach from the Thompson series with additional books in Theory. I believe that all students want to learn and feel successful. I also believe that all students can learn so long as the materials are available to them in a form that is most compatible with their individual learning styles. My most important charge, along with helping those I tutor to "get" the materials, is to help them analyze their own styles of learning, identify what is successful for them and what is not, and help them create new strategies which might meet with more consistent success, both short and long term. My "ace in the hole" in teaching is the fact that I care for students and they know it. I do make it well known that I am there to teach; not be their friend (or their parent!). Students of all ages are welcomed in my world...from beginners to the senior citizen who wants to learn more. I strive to make the learning fun and exciting by finding what works for the student as an individual. They are not all alike and because of this, I find that "cookie cutter" style teaching doesn't work. If something doesn't work one way, I try to find another way to achieve the same goal. Rather than my playing a new piece for the student, I ask that the student TRY it themselves first....breaking it down into small pieces so that it doesn't overwhelm them at first run through. Since my years as an undergraduate student, one of my passions has always been giving back to the community through tutoring and mentoring. Over the past eleven years, I have tutored countless times, particularly in research paper and essay writing (in various disciplines), literature, and even mathematics. I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Education and seek to continue giving back in this way!
