During my years attending UMass Dartmouth, I recieved my Bachelor's Degree in Sociology with a minor in Business Administration. But I also gained alot of experience working with children. I tutored elementary age students in the star program and college students at my campus job in the Unity House. I also was the coordinator for the New Bedford Speech Academy. This program taught students fron 4-6th grade public speaking skills. I have applied the skills I learned to my current job as a home tutor. I tutor elementary to high school students in all subjects.
My teaching style is unique to each student's indivdual needs. I take time to recognize my students learning style and provide the need materials or teaching style based their needs. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 2005 I went on to work as a Special Education aid at the middle school level. I was responsible for a ten year old girl with Asperger's Syndrome, which required me to monitor her throughout the day as well as modify each lesson given in each subject. As math was her weakest subject, I was able to develop a a learning system which suite her learning style. I also taught her not only math but every other subject such as science, social studies, grammar, and reading. Throughout college I also worked as an elementary level tutor for those students with low reading levels

As an educator, I have 10 years experience in public education for grades k-12. While my main focus has been in the field of Special Education as a Teacher's Assistant, I am now certified to teach English Language Arts in Massachusetts. I am pursuing my Master's Degree in Education, so that I may obtain a Reading Specialist license. I have tutored students in math, social studies, english language arts, and reading.
Because I've worked with students who have various learning differences, I have a vast array of teaching strategies. What works for one child doesn't always work for another. I encourage auditory learners to always read the instructions back to me. It helps if they can explain the material as if they were teaching the subject. Visual learns tend to respond to charts, graphs, note-taking, powerpoint- anything containing shapes and color. Tactile learners have sensory nee ... read more

I believe that all children learn best when they experience success. Therefore, I make sure to give all my students opportunities to succeed by asking questions that challenge students to think but are not impossible to answer. My teaching style involves a combination of constructivism and direct instruction. Instead of lecturing, I pose questions, calling on students randomly. When I restate what is correct about a student's answer, my students understand that they have successfully contributed to the learning process. I point out any misconceptions that might arise before they do, so my students avoid making common mistakes. I supplement my lessons with visual representations and videos for visual learners, as well as hands-on, inquiry-based activities for tactile learners. I have extensive experience using technology in the classroom and have designed many interesting laborator ... read more
