I am a true constructivist. I believe that students need to construct their own understanding if they are to achieve mastery. When it comes to math, many kids can repeat the motions and get the right answer, but may not really understand what they are doing or why. I actually love the question, "When am I ever going to use this?" I know how math is applied to every day life, and without true understanding of the underlying concepts, students will not know when, where, or how to apply the operations they have learned. My philosophy is that education should be as individualized as possible because people do not learn in the same manner. For instance, some people are visual learners while others, like myself, are auditory learners. I strongly believe that educators should expose their students to as many fields and ideas as possible.
