My teaching style changes based on how the student has been taught previously and I will try different methods to see what will work best for the individual. I know all students learn differently so I may take a direct method where we will go over the facts and jump straight into the material. Another method will be re-examining the material and finding what the student already knows and how that student normally studies.

During my Doctoral candidate years, I worked as both a engineering lecturer and laboratory instructor for 3 different engineering fields. The fields were circuit design, applied mathematics and practical laboratory equipment usage. I also gave lectures in Applied Optics (physics) for Seniors at Clarkson University during my last Doctoral year (1984-85) at campus.
Informal for large groups as I wanted the students to see me as like them, but with enough capability to inspire them to listen. I learned early on you cannot make anybody learn anything. You must inspire them to want to learn. At the 1-on-1 setting (tutoring level), I work at a very detailed level with the particular student I have with me at the time. Each one is sufficiently different to warrant different teaching approaches to maximum effect and retention.

I'm patient and listen to the student to see what they get and don't get about the premise of the lesson. Then we get to it. Careful reinforcement of the Correct method will ensure Remembrance and Results. Also, Lessons must be approached within the context of the Big Picture. Students need to realize that there are no pointless or forgettable sections. Basically, communication is key followed by practice, reinforcement, more practice. Learning can be at pace, but laziness and whining will not be tolerated.
