My comments on tutoring Poetry : One of my poems got published. I continue to write many more.

I am currently a student at the university of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where I am majoring in early childhood education with a minor in speech pathology. I am working full time as the head aftercare teacher at hickory valley Christian school where I work with elementary school children. I have much experience in teaching, I am also a current tutor with the Honors program, working with four students ranging from 5th grade to freshman in college. The method of teaching I prefer is maieutic, i.e., one which draws knowledge from the student, rather than attempts to place it in him/her from without. To me, the process of asking questions and allowing the student's curiosity and intelligence to reach conclusions is far more effective than one-sided lecturing. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style encourages relating reading and writing to what they are already reading, writing and listening to. If students can understand language and grammar in their own context and how it is useful then it will be better and easier to incorporate into their own writing and reading and therefore more natural. For example, while teaching ballads I introduced a Coldplay and Bob Dylan songs to students to better understand Lord Randall and other ballads of the time. I am driven by watching students succeed as far as test scores are concerned, but also teaching them the life skills that literature introduces to us.
