I believe everyone can learn to read if given the proper phonics curriculum. All students love to learn if you can find the key to their style and desire. I enjoy the "art" of teaching, finding the student's "key", and watching the "lights" come on. I have been blessed to be chosen by several students as the most influential teacher in their academic careers. I have had students in my classroom with various special education labels in both public and private schools, and I have been successful in bringing them up to grade level in math and reading. My teaching style is about positive feedback and patience. With my experience in psychology I have found that a calm nurturing environment lends itself to bolstering understanding for children. Also, a calm environment allows a child the ability to think without excessive distraction. Everyone learns in their own personal way and as a mentor I would like to help foster that.
As a college graduate and a mentor at a behavioral health facility I have gained valuable knowledge and confidence in one on one guidance. I have a BA in psychology and a BFA in studio arts and I am currently pursuing a place as a PhD candidate in the educational psychology program at UNL. I am experienced in math, english, psychology, and studio art. Also, I volunteered for the Lincoln Initiative for Tutoring program where I tutored elementary students after school and served as a role model.
