A child's imagination is my lesson plan

I've been fascinated with computer programming since I was 8 and found a book about Fortran in my grandma's encyclopedia set. Our school had a handful of computers but no programmers. There was a single book in the library that I had checked out constantly until the librarian finally just let me have it when I graduated 8th grade. I went to college and began to learn more and finally met the mentors that were so important to my journey. I have a degree in Computer Science and I've been employed as a programmer since 2002, including time in the US Air Force doing 3D flight sims and the medical technology field. A Little Bit About Me...

As a Cal Poly graduate with a BS in Computer Science, I have had to master most math and computer science course material. My experience is teaching math to mostly older teens and young adults. In the professional world, I have trained all levels of employees on various computer systems (authoring, programming, operating systems, etc.). The training has taken the form of one-on-one, stand-up before a group, and creating online courses for "on your own" classes.
I believe that most subjects are not difficult to master. Most problems come from "under learning" the subject. Repetition may work for some subjects, but with math the student needs to understand WHY a process works. Once this is learned, the rest comes rather easily. I am a teacher who has learned through experience. I went from college to Kenya to teach in an international school for 2 years. I learned a lot about teaching and culture during that time. When I returned I subbed for 2.5 years in which I learned more than all my schooling. During that time I earned a master's and have gone on to move in the direction that jobs have come.I taught SPED for a year, taught at an Outdoor School for a year, taught Kindergarten at a private school and worked with Autistic children as a one on one tutor. Knowledge and skills are most permanent when we discover and create for ourselves, so I like to be a guide that leads the student to their own conclusions, rather than take over and lecture. I will be there to direct and support the student; I like when the student works at the board or on the paper instead of me, so that they retain what is being taught.
