I have been teaching for three years at the secondary level, although I have worked with younger students. My degree is in Business Education, but I have tutored in math before as well. I have also tutored students for the math section of the ASVAB. I am passionate in one-on-one interactions and this has been my strong point in teaching.

I am a sophomore mathematics major at the University of Texas at El Paso. I have taught a GED class for adults facilitated by the Housing Authority of the City of El Paso (HACEP) and the YWCA. I have 6 years of tutoring experience and other programs under which I tutored include the National Honor Society, Beta Club, and JROTC. My teaching style generally varies based on who I am tutoring/teaching. I generally treat my students as adults and under the assumption that they will go to college. I also tend to go a little beyond what is covered in the subject (especially in math) as a preparation for whatever course may come next (i.e. I would probably give a prealgebra student full fledged algebra work in order to prepare him/her for the next year).

I have good analytical and diagnostic skills. I am able to take students at their present levels of cognitive ability and help them to progress and also reinforce concepts that the students might have missed and need to master for complete understanding. I am patient and encourage students to ask questions and offer suggestions. I firmly believe that teaching basic skills and study habits will create successful lifelong learners. I have always loved teaching. I never had a desire to divert from teaching and become a counselor or an administrator. I have taught students from kindergarten to community college. I worked as a research assistant at Arizona State University until I graduated with my Bachelor's Degrees in psychology. This allowed me a great deal of hands on experience in applying mathematical and scientific principles in gathering data and doing statistical regressions. I have also worked as tutor independently for about the last 5 years, primarily in math and science for high school and college student. i have also helped with test prep for sat and ASVAB. No two people are alike, so my teaching style is to find out what a person's style of understanding is, and to frame my teaching around that. Some people need to hear it out loud, some need to write, some need a picture. In whichever case, I consider the material to be learned once the student can explain it back to me.

I ascribe to Gardner's 8 Stages of Intelligence theory, which purports the belief that every student is gifted, intelligent and capable of learning in a manner that conducive to their own unique style. As a teacher, I use myself as a tool to help facilitate the learning process. I have a social work background which, in my work has always been integrated with some component of teaching, both in and out of the classroom. I can teach most K-12 subjects, college prep courses and provide tutoring services including assessment and curriculum development. I tend to be rather versatile in my teaching methods as I adapt to the learning style of the student. It's what I have found most effective in improving the quality of their educational experience.
