I like to take a 'backdoor' approach with my students by creating activities that are interesting and fun. I think this helps in changing the student's attitude from a negative to a positive one. I use an intercultural (as opposed to assimilationist) perspective, knowing that language teachers also teach culture; this is not only desirable, it is probably unavoidable. We cannot allow the material on testing instruments to dictate the entire scope of what we teach. I still find it difficult to convince many people that literacy, strictly speaking, is usually not the challenge adult ELLs face. Their challenges usually consist in expanding the English they learned in school, so that it becomes useful for academic purposes, or for basic life-skills in a new country.
