More About This Tutor...

My teaching philosophy and style is founded upon the belief that all children are brilliant and can succeed. My approach to teaching is highly individualized and targeted to meet a student's specific needs. If your child is struggling, I believe in figuring out the root of the problem, boredom, trouble reading or note-taking, learning style, and then finding strategies that address that difficulty directly. In teaching, I am patient, motivated, and fun. I like to make whatever I'm teaching come alive for the student. I want my students to understand that learning is a life-long process where they can explore the world; not something they are forced to do, but something that they get to do. So let's have some fun with it.

My comments on tutoring Shakespeare : So many common sayings come from Shakespeare's writing! Brushing up your Shakespeare will not only help you in school, but will enhance your understanding of many of the classics of literature as well as modern plays and cinema. Essential for an educated person in the classic sense. Let me help you by communicating my love for all things Shakespeare!

I hold a Bachelors in English with a minor in Philosophy and Religion. I have years of experience in business writing and in creative writing and poetry; some work in advertising and PR as well. I read books for money, forecasting pre-publication fiction for the trade magazine Publisher's Weekly. English is the most beautiful, malleable and useful language on earth! Whatever you learn now will greatly assist you in school and in the job market of the future.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am the author of five historical novels and a number of articles, poems and short stories. I occasionally do short “residences” teaching Language Arts and Drama to special needs students in k-12 schools for VSA Arts of Florida. My graduate studies emphasized American and Tudor/Stuart History. My doctorate included a Criminal Justice minor. I regularly teach writing and grant writing seminars to adults, usually through libraries on weekends or in the evening.
I believe everyone will respond well to individualized instruction when the tutor studies the student's learning style and offers the information in the form best suited to each learner. I am patient and encouraging with students. I work hard to find ways to present a subject so that each learner will find it interesting.

I value shared goals for each session and encourage open conversation to cultivate ideas. Typically asked to assist on all levels of essay-writing, I start with the question and expectations. As an editor, I am extremely thorough. I make sure the student understands any edits that I mark are an attempt to help that student best learn. I walk through all edits with the student. I also take an approach of learning WITH the student and will not to lecture AT the student. Instead, I read with the student and ask questions. I am NEVER afraid to admit a lack of knowledge, and will work with the student to find the best possible solution to every problem. I never want my students to feel alone or abandoned in the learning process.

My mother is a reading development teacher. She works with Title 1 children every day in her job. Before coming to college, I volunteered over 100 hours working with a Title 1 child on her reading, writing, and math skills. She was in the third grade for the second time that year, and by no means can I take credit for the fact that she went on to pass that year, but I do believe I helped her by understanding her difficulties, working with her as someone who was interested in seeing her succeed. I am a very patient person, and most of all, I consider myself empathetic. I believe that teaching is achieved through understanding each child's specific needs and emotions, and working through the difficulties with firm, but kind leadership.

I believe that every student can learn if I can adequately gauge what their abilities and intelligences are. Utilizing the multiple intelligences theory, my first session with my student will be concentrating on getting to know them as a worker and a person. I feel their outside experiences have just as much contribution as their classroom experiences. Your child and I, during this first session, will conduct a meet and greet of sorts and I will then map out an education success plan for them. It's through their needs and their cognitive abilities that I feel any student can be successful, and become a productive member of society.

A Little Bit About Me...

Over the past few years my students have taught me almost as much as I have taught them. I have learned that I have an infinite amount of patience, persistence pays off, and using imagination in my lessons helps students learn the most. In this day and age, school is no longer just about learning it is about teaching students skills for the real world, skills they will find useful in their own life. This is my goal. I believe my students have a better grasp on reading comprehension, writing and verbal skills thanks to being part of my class. I am a dedicated, hardworking person who does not mind putting in the time required for excellence.
My beliefs about education illustrate that every child has the right and the ability to learn. I believe in data driven instruction. It is not good enough to blindly teach everyday, without proving you are making progress within the skills ... read more

Learning has always been my goal. The hope of understanding is the light which illuminates this dark abyss of bureaucracy, strange smells and seeming disorder. I have read ceaselessly, watched ravenously, pondered to no end; a mind which never sleeps but continues seeking. I was Valedictorian of my middle school and graduated from FSU magna cum laude, but these are hot air to me; decorations. A's in school are just a by-product. I seek the real thing, which may not be found in this lifetime, in these bodies, with these minds, but I seek it anyway.
Throughout my existence I have found myself in the role of teacher. Whether it be academic or physical, I have been blessed with keen abilities, as well as an ease in communicating ideas. This, I believe, stems from a need to comprehend not just the action of something, but the reason for that action as well. By this, often I am able to s ... read more

As an undergraduate, I worked with the America Reads Program, mentoring a first grade student with reading difficulties. We met three days a week for an entire school year and progressed through successive lesson plans. I currently work as a mentor and advisor, for Florida State Universities Advising first program. On a daily basis, I interact with first time college students who are undecided on their course of study. We discuss collegiate and career objectives and generate a class schedule that reflects their interests as well as full fills their liberal studies requirements.
I strongly believe that the best quality a teacher can have is adaptability. As an instructor I have a responsibility to conform to my students learning styles.
