I enjoyed tutoring college students interested in physics. During my two years of experienced, I learned that students use different approaches solving physics problems. My goal in teaching is to help students understand how the scientific process affects them on a personal level. I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.

I have noticed a couple things in my years tutoring people in math. I have noticed that many people have trouble with the fundamental concepts of fractions, decimals, order of operations, and adding/subtracting positive and negative numbers. If a student does not have these concepts together much of the 'higher level' mathematics can seem a blur and highly confusing. I have also noticed that students like real world or relevant examples when learning a new math concept. I like to find out what my student is into and tailor problems to things that affect their every day life. Practical real world examples can significantly increase a students retainment of concepts.
