Sign Language is one of my top subjects! I have grown up with a sibling who is Deaf and always used sign language to communicate and I have been an Interpreter for more than 15 years and was NAD IV certfified in 2000. In addition, I have an ESSE V certification.

I have worked nearly two decades in the educational system as a Sign Language Interpreter. I have experience with K-12, Community College, and University levels. I worked as Mentor for a K-12 school district with 13 Mentees for five years. Because of the new state law, the Mentee's goal was to become certified to continue with employment. 10 out of the 13 Mentee's succeeded in compliance with the state law.

American Sign Language Tutor

I have taken all the sign language courses at Modesto Junior College (these classes are of the same curriculum as Stanislaus State). I received an "A" on all of my coursework. I then was asked by the sign language instructor at MJC to become her teaching assistant. I was in charge of teaching on my own when the instructor was called away to business. I instructed the students under the direction of the instructor. I tutored the students in the tutoring center at MJC.
I believe that it is best for the student to let me know what needs they have in order for me to help them become more fluent in sign language. I believe in individualized teaching. In my sixth grade classroom, I individualized instruction wherever possible. In reading I tested my students and placed them in books at their reading level. I had them write reading summaries and corrected their first drafts. In sixth weeks, I retested and in most instances moved students to a higher level. In my math classes, I tested students and had them begin at the level that they needed to master. If a student could not add, I had him work on his addition skills. I moved students to the next skill level once they had mastered the level that they were working on. Of course, I did group teaching in my classroom, but I individualized wherever possible.
