I believe that the learning process in the sciences requires a combination of individual study time, instructor guidance, hands-on experiences, and reflection time. I try to incorporate models and activities/games into my lesson plans as much as possible to help my students make connections with concrete examples that they won't forget. I am currently teaching the Marine Biology Field Studies and Lab course (OCB 4043L) at Florida Atlantic University. I take my students into the field on snorkeling trips to teach them field sampling techniques, and then how to analyze samples back at the lab. For the last five years of my life I have dedicated myself to exploring the different fields and ecosystems involved in marine biology. As a college freshman I started by working in a Fish Ecologist's laboratory examining otoliths to map the age, growth, and distribution of fish. From there I was accepted into an island semester program where I had the opportunity to live off of a marine reserve for six months.
