I have been in the field of education for approximately 14 years of which the last 8 years have been special education. I have worked with students of all ages, on all skill levels and many with learning disabilities through 8th grade. I was a high school art teacher for two years and I worked in a college library for four years. I am able and willing to work with students of all ages. My emphasis has been the field of language arts; however, I taught middle school math for students with learning disabilities for two years. I am capable of assessing student's skill levels in both math and language arts. I feel that this is a strength. My teaching style is very simple and effective. I start with Technique. I believe that it is the best interest of a student’s success to learn about the instrument before learning how to play it. Then, I incorporate Basic Theory. It is also important for a student to understand why they are playing and how music flows together. My students then begin to learn the major fundamentals of the Bass; Groove, Feel, and how to be a leader. They will also learn how to write their own music, and if they desire how to read and notate. Music Theory is a big part of my curriculum. I feel it is the most important skill to understand what you are playing and why. I encourage the students at any time can bring in their own material to learn. I strongly believe that education matters. It is important for all students who want to be successful in life. I am also aware that education comes in many different forms. For some it is in the books themselves. For others it is in the interpretation of the work, and for many it is simply in the joy of learning and building self esteem. Throughout my 20+ years of teaching and tutoring students, I have become very aware that all students can learn and be successful if they can find their strengths and a way to use them to their advantage. Once they feel success, it becomes an addiction and they want more and more of it. I feel it is my job to be patient and help them find their strengths. After graduation from college in Texas I taught high school math in Brownsville, Texas for 4 years. I moved to Dallas and taught math in Richardson for 8 more years before we moved to California.
