A Little Bit About Me...

I have a background in study skills and educating others, as well as excellent communication skills and a lot of patience. I have done four years of math and chemistry (respectively) during high school, including elementary calculus and quantum mechanics. I have also done three years of Spanish with and without "Rosetta Stone" (total of one year with "Rosetta Stone"). I have also done quite a bit of work with young children.
In addition to providing help, I will also teach your student some important study skills regardless of the subject that he/she is studying. More About This Tutor...

As a graduate from the Oregon Institute of Technology I have had an in depth education in math, physics, and electronics with a healthy supply of technical writing. While in school I was able to help other fellow students in their math classes, much as I did when I was in high school. This experience, coupled with growing up in a house with two teachers for parents, has helped me obtain a useful teaching style.
I like math because it's all about building off of fundamentals. Once a person has a good hold of the fundamentals, they can begin to apply them to more complicated problems. I find the best way to build up the fundamentals is to relate it to the student in some way. Once the material is related, the student is better able to focus and concentrate, which allows for a quicker and more firm grasp of the subject matter.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that all of my students can learn the material presented to them, if it is presented in the correct way. I have taken a lot of time to learn about the brain research that has been done to discover how different students learn. I like to have several tricks in my bag so that if one approach does not work I will have other methods to try to allow others to grasp the same material in a different way that makes sense to them. I am particularly sensitive to students who feel defeated in mathematics education and reap great rewards when I see that they are beginning to understand and believe in themselves.
After graduating from the University of Oregon with a BS in Basic Mathematics and Integrated Science, I volunteered for the Peace Corps and found myself teaching math and science in a village school in The Gambia, West Africa. Upon my return from the Peace Corps I landed ... read more

I have been teaching children of all ages in many settings for the past 6 years. I have worked with students of all levels and helped them be successful. In college I tutored elementary through college students including English Language Learners, in various subjects. I have also helped and taught in the classroom, mostly in small groups or one-on-one. Through my work as an aide at an elementary school I have learned the standards for each grade and am familiar with the curriculum and methods used, especially for the lower students who I work with.
I believe that learning should be fun and effective. It is important to me that students enjoy the discovery and challenge of learning but that they also learn the discipline and perseverance that will help them continue to grow. I enjoy using many styles of learning and kid-friendly activities to help students understand and maste ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Making school awesome for students is challenging, but it is something that gives me a lot of satisfaction. Before I begin teaching, I create several goals and strategies to make it clear what I expect and what direction we want to go. I emphasize that as long as they give it a 100% effort, they will do well. I use as many teaching tools as possible. I make the concepts as clear as possible, and I check for understanding before we move on. I make classes interesting by connecting the material to things they like. I also like to incorporate games. Finally, I like to maintain a sense of humor. This not only allows class to be enjoyable, but the students do better when they are relaxed. The combination of organization, making the material clear, using various methods, and making the classes fun is how I make teaching successful and enjoyable.

A Little Bit About Me...

Although I have earned my degree, BS in Psychology, my previous education includes 2 years at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico and 2 years of Engineering at Oregon State University. The years at St. John's have given me the unusual ability to tutor students in Ancient Greek. They laid a foundation in Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Calculus which the years of Engineering built up further. At the high school and college level I am also currently able to tutor Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, Psychology and Anthropology.
My teaching style is probably best suited to high school and college students. Although I successfully helped my own 3 children through their elementary school, high school and college years, my tutoring experience has been with older students. My wife is a Montessori trained teacher so I have absorbed that method for tutoring. Each student mu ... read more

Since then I have: measuring tectonic plate movement in the Caribbean, creating models of multi-phase flow, and testing the accuracy of GPS in devices like BlackBerry and Droid phones for vehicle fuel-use modeling. I have two bachelors degrees, BS in mathematics and BS in geology. In addition my passion for math and science was acknowledged with a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship honorable mention. I enjoy working with people, and have mentored undergraduate geology interns and taught pre-calculus as a supplementary instructor. I also studied spanish for five years and spent five months on a student exchange in Southern Chile.

I truly enjoy what I do. I love enabling students to achieve their goals, become self sufficient, and successful. I teach to the individual, looking for individual strengths and weaknesses; then modify my approach to meet the needs of the individual student. My goal is to enable the student to be and do their best.
I have many years of experience working with students of all ages and abilities. I have taught in public schools, in private schools, with troubled and behavior problem youth, incarcerated youths (13-20 years of age), as well as home-schooled students, small group, and one-on-one. I have tutored students in all levels of math, science, English, Spanish, social studies, and history. I also have experience with SAT and ACT prep.

I believe in a teaching approach that takes into consideration each child's unique culture. Not only is culturally appropriate teaching beneficial, it's necessary! I plan to implement interactive learning and integrate curriculum. In doing so, I am providing the student with possible ways to connect previous knowledge with the new content they are learning. I will present my students with the opportunity to learn in an environment containing differentiated instruction. In this way, I hope to find what methods are most efficient with each individual. This in turn will teach the student which methods work best for them, therefore increasing their ability to teach themselves.
Throughout my college experience, I have had multiple chances to volunteer as a classroom aide, tutor, and student teach. As I am certified to teach grades K through 8, I have taken college courses in all subject ... read more

I love to teach students that want to learn. I have a lot of experience building confidence along with building basic skills. As an undergraduate at CSU, Sacramento I volunteered my time to tutor a student from the time she was in 6th grade through 8th grade. Tutoring was done mostly in math. I have a BA in Environmental Studies with a minor in Biology. I also have extensive experience using computer software, such as Microsoft Office and ArcGIS. During my college experience I was a part of many student study groups which involved asking help from others as well as offering guidance in subjects we felt strong in.
