My comments on tutoring Desktop Publishing : My undergraduate degree is in Visual Arts with a concentration in Graphic Design and Photography.

My teaching philosophy starts out with essentialism which believes in a strong core curriculum and high academic standards. I believe it is important to have a strong foundation on which to build upon. After ensuring a strong foundation I tend to lean more towards progressivism. I believe students should be taught what is relevant today while becoming more independent learners, by utilizing problem solving skills and critical thinking. I teach the foundation and build upon that based upon what is relevant in a particular field today. I also include student-centered teaching strategies. I believe in order to learn a student must have base knowledge of a subject that leads into hands on assignments which require mastery of a subject. Students must have both of these in order to truly master what they are learning. I also believe that team based learning is essential today. It is i ... read more

I have a great love of teaching and guiding young people in their academic studies. My approach to teaching or tutoring is open and involves as much personal encouragement as I can. I believe it is essential for the student to have a desire to learn in order for retainable education and it is essential for the teacher/tutor to encourage this desire as much as possible through teaching practices and activities.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have learned as a father of a home schooler that children learn in different ways. Some subjects hold more interest and are easier to learn. When students need to learn subjects that they do not find so interesting, creative ways must be used to make the class interesting. I especially enjoy finding and putting into practice those ways that will help a child to learn such as a rewards system, learning by touching and doing, and other things that will make the class interesting. Interested students are motivated to learn.
For the past ten years I have worked in central Mexico. My responsibilities there included learning Spanish and teaching by lecturing, classes, home studies, and children's clubs. I love to teach children and adults who are motivated to learn. In Mexico I have taught English to those wanting to learn the language. I have a good understanding of the Spanish lang ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I received a BS degree from UTC and taught at DuPont Elementary for 8 years, taught for PC training organizations & then managed a training program at Chattanooga State Technical Community College where I wrote all manuals, taught all classes, & designed all testing. I also tutored for 2 years on a personal level with mostly elementary students in Math & English. I also did training for Erlanger Hospital & Memorial Hospital. I enjoy making a difference in the intellect of students. I have taught many PC software classes on MS Offioe, the internet and these are critical skills in this age also.
My style of teaching is to explain the how and why and then immediately have the student perform a task - hopefully on his own, but with assistance if needed. I then repeat that until a student will take on a challenge and do the tasks solely by himself. I love making a difference i ... read more

Over the course of the past 10 years I have spent time working with students struggling to develop their academic skills, particularly in the areas of language arts and the social studies. From my initial work as a foster care academic transitions liaison,to the attainment of my M.ED., my broad service as a classroom teacher, department chair and A.P. program coordinator, I have been fortunate to work with students from across the broadest possible ability spectrum and have learned to sow the seeds of confidence and success in learners of all competency and motivational levels.
Due to my experience with a broad range of young learners, each working at a different academic and or cognitive pace, I follow a modified Socratic approach to both my classroom and one on one instruction by placing the emphasis on the student as we identify areas for growth. I then sculpt an academic progra ... read more

I am passionate about education and ensuring that children can grasp the concepts that will make them successful later in life. In say this, I believe that all children have the capability to learn, just not necessarily in the same manner. Through my years of experience in teaching, I have learned to adjust styles to fit the needs of the student. I utilize positive approaches to learning, and have found that visual approaches really cement the data being related to the student.

First I would like to get to know the student and parents, focusing mainly on the student's interests and goals as well as how they feel about the particular subject they will be tutored in. After that I would have the student show me where they currently are in class and what they need help with. Then, depending on the particular circumstances, I would create a plan to get the student caught up and self-sufficient as quickly as possible. Even though fast results are what I hope for, the student would set the pace of the sessions. No topics would be overlooked and they would all receive as much time as the student needs to master them.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with students. It seems that, in most cases, tutoring is essentially a confidence-builiding exercise. Yes, it's anout instructional leadership, but it's more about showing a student they can really achieve what they're setting out to do. I really enjoy showing students that they know the solution; it's just about learning how to properly express it. And if they don't know the solution, it's about properly learning it in order to express it.
