My experience suggests that students must participate to fully benefit from the teaching and learning experience. This implies that they must be interested in the subject. Therefore it is, in part, the teacher's role to engage the students and guide them in a manner that engenders their interest.
Beyond this I have found that students respond best when their strengths are recognized and their efforts rewarded.
