My comments on tutoring Elementary Phonics : After an initial assessment, lessons start with the student's weakest area and progress from there.

My teaching style is one of facilitator. I like to emphasize student-centered learning giving students the responsibility to take the initiative for meeting the demands of various learning tasks. However, I am aware that many times with my regular education students and the students that I tutor, I am a combination of facilitator and demonstrator with an emphasis on demonstration and modeling. I guide students in developing and applying their skills.
I have been teaching in a public school in the Sugar Land area for 27 years. For the past 10 years, I have taught both regular education and GT students in the English Language Arts block. Many of my former students were waived ESL intermediate students whose grasp of reading and writing grew within the time spent in my class. I think it takes a lot for one teacher to reach all of types of students who are all at different levels of interest in the subject being taught as well as at different levels of understanding. However, I feel it is the teacher's responsibility to give them all equal opportunity to learn. It is not just about grades and assignments, that is just the means to an end, but it is about learning. In order for the students to learn, the teacher needs to be passionate about the students as well as the subject that is being taught. That will instill in the students a desire to learn and understand.
In having a science background, I have not only learned laboratory skills and reasoning skills, but I have learned how to increase efficiency, communicate in a clear manner, and write in a way that is direct and clear.
