My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Lang based learning disability

My niece was having difficulty with learning to read. She attended a well known reading center, which did not improve her reading skills. Then she was diagnosed with a language based learning disability. I began researching and I found the Orton- Gillingham training program. I began training and tutoring at the Akron Learning Center. I have also tutored reading for A+ Abilities Plus. I continue to work with my niece and she recently score advanced on all areas of the OGT's.
I teach using a multisensory approach. I also teach from the known to the unknown.

It is my firm belief that if students have the confidence in themselves to believe they can do well, they will succeed. I believe that there is just not one way to teach because there are many different learning style. Teachers must identify their students' learning styles and find ways to incorporate them into the lesson. I agree with Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Some students are auditory learners, while some are visual. Some students are bodily-kinesthetic learners, while some are naturalists. Other students may be interpersonal or intrapersonal learners. A Little Bit About Me...

My six years of teaching experience started in Pittsburgh, PA as a Preschool teacher within a Head Start program. I then moved to Martinsburg, WV where I taught Kindergarten for three years and First Grade for one year in a public school system. As a young student I was very motivated to attend medical school at a young age. I received a bachelor degree, BS, in biology with minors in both psychology and chemistry. After graduating with my undergraduate degree early, I unexpectedly found a passion for teaching. Currently, I am working towards my masters degree, MS, in biology. My teaching experience started teaching in a pre-school with 4 year olds. I then taught 3rd grade for 1 year and kindergarten for 9 years. When I updated my certificate (just in the last year) I did some teaching in a mildly handicapped resource room.
I feel my style of teaching is one of being a facilitator. I choose to interact with the student by asking questions so enabling them to reach the answer through their own thinking processes.
