My comments on tutoring Continuing Education : Instructor of English at college in the US and Germany

The basic approach is to get to know the student and teach the way the student can learn best. Therefore, the teaching style may vary depending on the personality and the request the student, respectively his or her parents have. Otherwise, I follow the Socratic method and guide the student by having him explore his own knowledge and experience and build on this individual foundation of knowledge and skills.
I spent two decades of my professional life teaching English in Germany, authorizing and co-authorizing textbooks for the English classroom. Since I have been living in the United States I enjoy teaching German from beginner to college level. Whether it is in front of a class of 40 or one-on-one, I have been endowed not only with the talent to teach, but also with the God-given ability to motivate. Most students hate my guts for the first week or two because I do not tolerate underachievement from anyone, including parents; but down the line the most frequent evaluation I receive is, “Mr. C, you are awesome.” There is no one who cannot be motivated to learn something well; and I always associate what must be learned with what a student's passion is or in what he/she is already interested.
