I am a very hands on type person and encourage students to use manipulatives, pictures, or various other visual aids that may help them further understand the concepts that are being mastered. I feel all children have the capacity to learn but it is up to us as educators to find how to help that child learn. For example, some people may learn through discussion, while others may need to see pictures or presentations of the subject matter. I like to identify how the person learns first through questions, or by testing them with a simple task first to identify the method which seems to work best for them.
