I believe as an educator you have to understand the topic you are teaching and the students your are teaching. As a teacher you are dealing with various levels of learning as well different personalities. I believe you have to be open to what works for the individual and the classroom. Many young students do not understand why they must learn and why it is important. We as educators must show students how education applies to all life, especially theirs. I have always placed a high value on education, and, having worked full time to put myself through college, have developed an even greater appreciation for students who have the desire to learn. During my undergraduate career, and upon the recommendation of several of my professors, I developed an informal study/tutoring program where classmates and I could get together to go over the week’s lecture and homework, as well as study for future exams. Upon my decision to return to college and obtain my BS degree, it was discovered that I possessed an uncanny, natural talent involving all aspects of the studies surrounding English. Reading, comprehension, symbolism, poetry, creative writing, poise, maturitym ,ect. After that placement exam, it was decided that I did not have to take any English courses, or, I would take more advanced courses. I did choose the latter. Throughout the last 10 years, I have helped my husband, brother, all of my children, etc. I have tutored them on how to write a well developed paper on their topic of choice, and have it read showing the expertise of the writer. I am a dedicated teacher, as the old adage goes 'once a teacher, always a teacher'. I taught English Language and Grammar up to pre college level. I usually do a pre assessment of my students to determine their level of functionality, the same techniques I used with my own children. I do not give up on my students, every child can learn. It is up to us as teachers to find ways to deal with the individual difference in each child and take that to the next level.
