A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with an MA in English (TESOL), and a BA in English Composition (writing). I have had a successful career as an English Instructor. My notable areas of expertise include writing (essays, GREs, SATs, TOEFLs, resume writing, etc.), grammar/linguistics, reading skills, oral communication, and vocabulary development. I am proficient in several foreign languages as well: Japanese, Chinese (Mandarin), Korean, and some Spanish.
I have had the experience of teaching students of all ages: kindergarteners, elementary schoolers, middle schoolers, high schoolers, and adults. I have also taught students whose primary language is not English. Each age group has required a different style of approach, so I cannot comment on my teaching style in full here, but suffice it to say that I cater my teaching style to match the student's age, academic skill, and time.

My approach to teaching begins with having a high expectation for what my students can accomplish. Therefore, my goal is, in part, to help my students love learning and to translate the love for learning into higher achievements. I try to inspire the students In terms of style, I explain the basic concept being taught and then illustrate by way of examples. I combine a bit of lecturing with meaningful interaction. Next, it is the students term to practice what has been taught. I may use a variety of interactive learning games in order to re-enforce the concept being taught. Somewhere down the line some for of testing is given for the purpose of checking to see if the student is grasping the concepts being taught.

I began my (formal) teaching career as a Peace Corps volunteer in the countries of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan where I taught English as a foreign language to the students ranging from the 3rd to the 11th grade, working with the local teachers in the host countries, and gaining valuable cultural and international insights. After coming back to the States, I became a substitute teacher for the Stockton School for Adults where I taught ESL, computer skills, English, and math to immigrants, senior citizens, high school students, and post-high school students.
