I lived in Cuba for 6 years studying medicine. I speak Spanish fluently from that experience although I was born in Florida. I love teaching and interacting with young people all over the world. In my class, there is room for risk-taking, and the mistakes only help to clarify the idea or concept. I approach the teaching of Reading as a Whole Language process, and also as a set of applied skills. I taught public school for 4 years before getting a masters degree in Religious Education with a Concentration in Childhood Education. I wanted to complement my undergraduate Elementary Education degree. Therefore, I choose the childhood education concentration at seminary. Then I was a Assoicate Pastor for Children for over 13 years where I supervised paid workers and planned activities for a children's ministry at a local church. I had to maintain a budget for this ministry in the amount of $38,000. Over the course of all of these years, I have learned a vast array of skills.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always been fascinated with the Spanish language: its phonology, expressions, and many forms of the Spanish language. That love of Spanish caused me to formally study the language, and earn a B.A. and an M.A. in Spanish. My interest in Spanish also took me to Paraguay, and Mexico, where I lived for over three years. Many of my employment positions allowed me to use my Spanish communication skills. I have tutored part-time for over 10 years, taught high school, and done some light translation.
I follow the teaching strategy of Total Physical Response with commands, and TPR for stories. I find that this gets the students engaged with the foreign language, and they start communicating in Spanish faster than if other teaching styles or strategies were used. I achieved an AA degree at Florida Community College at Jacksonville. I am currently continuing my education at Florida State University where I am pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Biology. I will graduate in Spring of 2010. After, I will continue to Dental School to become a dentist.
I enjoy teach with all different age levels. Most recently, I taught 4th grade science through the FSU Teach Program. It was fun and really showed me how to teach students and make the lessons engaging and fun. Its important to keep the child focused.
