More About This Tutor...

I generally teach through visual aids and through very thorough explanations. If the student doesn't understand the first time I explain something, I will explain it in a different way and will keep explaining it in different ways until he/she fully understands what's being taught. I try my hardest to teach by explaining concepts logically and showing WHY and HOW, rather than simply saying something is what it is "just because."
I have always been an honors student and am currently taking the highest levels of math (AP Calculus) and spanish (Spanish 5) at my high school. I am involved in Peer Mentors at my school and have tutored multiple students in a variety of subjects. I have also tutored students outside of school, mostly in math. I love teaching others and helping them to understand concepts that they previously were struggling with. I am very patient and will work my hardest ... read more

Turning your weakness into your strength

I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.
I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a strong believer that a tutor is a friend first, and an instructor second. Many times I have found that a student's difficulties issued from personal matters, such as a lack of confidence, rather than specific weaknesses with the material. I always make every effort to allow a student to feel as comfortable as possible within the instructional dynamic, and in my experience, this has made all the difference. With regard to my methods of instruction, every student is very different, but I have found that making the material relatable to personal interests always induces an improvement. By casting the material in an attractive light, I have found that a student's motivation rapidly increases, with the added benefit that tutoring sessions become training sessions for their own passions, rather than rote education.

Since my student teaching in college, I have been eager to help students not only improve their skills in reading and writing, but to recognize the joy of literature and power of the written word. I have taught grades 6, 8, and 9-12; courses including the IB program for high level students and Read 180 for low level students in the middle school; and, prepared students for End-of-Grade tests, End-of-Course tests, the writing test, and for SAT testing. I have also edited and proofed academic and professional essays and writings for colleagues. With my varied experience of levels and ages, I have gained the ability to break skills down to their basics and build upon them for greater success.
I am of the strong opinion that everyone can learn to read well and can write skillfully. I am patient, fair, and honest. I am willing to focus on one skill at a time or combine and challenge, wh ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style ultimately depends of the student. I work much better with an individual or small group than with a class because I can find the angle that works best for each student. For younger children, I like to make learning into different games to keep their attention. For older students, I think it is important to establish some level of confidence early on within a subject so that they do not get too discouraged while new material is presented.
I have always had a good ability in math and sciences. I obtained a BA in Psychology from the University of Rochester, with a minor in Brain and Cognitive Sciences. I tutored college students in Psychology and Chemistry during my time there. I have also worked with all ages of children while working as a ski-instructor.

While studying at UNCC, composing papers on a variety of subjects enhanced my grammar and sentence structure. Being a Lead teacher at Dixon Academy, supplied me with experience in interacting with both children and their parents from diverse behavioral, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Helping my children achieve that goal allowed me to apply my knowledge in mathematics, English, art, and science.
