I have been teaching social studies in Cabarrus County for the past 12 years. I am nationally board certified and have my AP certification in World History. This summer I will be receiving my IB training and will begin teaching AP world history in the IB classroom. More About This Tutor...

Once I have an understanding of what a student is capable of I like to push them to go past their "comfort zone" in learning. It helps them understand that what may look difficult, may not always be so and that they only way to find out is to learn it. Also, I do not teach study habits. Instead I like to see what a students current habits are and work on expanding those habits so that the child does not get frustrated and overwhelmed. It is easier to learn more from current knowledge than try to teach a whole new way. After all, most students study habits are based on how their teacher has taught them, and I wouldn't go against what the teacher has taught. The point of tutoring is to help a child understand the work they are currently doing in school. It is my job to make sure that happens. I will want to speak with your child to determine the best way to teach them.

I am a College Student studying English and Politics

I was a tutor in high school for many elementary and middle school aged children. I am also experienced with writing papers, so I can help anyone who is writing for a college application or essay. I am a very quick learner, so if there is a subject I am not as familiar with I am willing to study it to help a student. My goal is to help students understand the context being taught, as well as teach them the importance of this knowledge. I have often used the phrase "When will I ever need this?" and I have learned later on in life that each subject is important. This is the messageI want to get across to children, that learning new things is a very important aspect of life.
I am a very firm believer that each human being has a different way of learning. I also believe that each subject has a different way to be taught. I teach based off of my students, as well as the subject.

I believe that each student is capable and, with nurturing and guidance, will learn eagerly. Many young people are unfamiliar with research skills – how to brainstorm; sift through information for facts; discern truth from fiction. I like to guide these students to be critical thinkers, making choices that will enhance their studies and their lives. By treating people with respect and understanding, I find that boundaries to learning can be broken, and students can excel.
I have a degree in history because it fascinates me. I am a professional writer because I have a facility with language and love to create ideas with words. I am a professional editor because I have a knack for grammar and punctuation and a natural ear for written language. I have numerous publications to my credit as both writer and editor. More About This Tutor...

Teaching social studies for so many years has allowed me to implement a great variety of teaching strategies, such as graphic organizers, cooperative learning, note-taking guides, debates, Socratic seminars, gallery walks, dramatic presentations, roundtable writing, independent studies, multi-media presentations, etc. As a middle school teacher, I learned quickly how to relate subject areas to the everyday lives of middle-schoolers. I am able to create assignments to cater to all of the multiple intelligences. I have an ability to break down abstract concepts in ways an early adolescent can understand. I strive for excellence in teaching, and I expect the same from my students, regardless of background. Most of all, I have discovered that it is true that students "don't care what you know until they know that you care."
I have taught or tutored students in preschool, middle sc ... read more

While pursuing a bachelor's degree in Psychology at the College of Staten Island, CUNY, I worked as a tutor and mentor at the SEEK Department. The SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge) Department provides counseling and tutoring services to freshmen who are educationally and financially disadvantaged. I tutored students in the liberal arts, prepared them for the CUNY reading and writing exams, and aided them in the selection and scheduling of courses. During the summer of 2002 I worked with the Continuing Education Department as a mentor to developmentally disabled high school students. I graduated magna cum laude and received awards for leadership and academic excellence.
As a tutor at my alma mater, I had the opportunity to work with students who learned at different speeds and who required different teaching techniques in order to grasp the material. Although ... read more
