I received a BS in Computer Science, software engineering, and a minor in Mathematics. I worked for one year at the TLC, or Teaching Learning Center, where upper classmen would tutor other students taking courses they had already taken and done quite well in. I tutored mostly computer courses (programming, excel, etc), but there were also days when I was asked to tutor Calculus.
I like to start by encouraging the student to demonstrate what they know, and then give them a little nudge of guidance when they come to something that confuses them. If they're really stumped, then I try to teach them first from a conventional standpoint, then switch to a more example-based explanation. Having graduated from a liberal arts university, I know that being well-rounded is very important in life. I graduated from Whitworth with a BS in Math and minors in Spanish and Computer Science, so I know what it is like to learn complex subjects. I have tutored my peers along with students younger and older than myself, as a mathematician and a Spanish speaker. I led a Spanish Live Lab for two years and informally tutored math for four. Also, I have a great deal of grammatical knowledge from writing research papers in math and computer science and Spanish.

I am a senior at Reed College studying mathematics. While at Reed I have worked as both a grader and a tutor. Having graded assignments, I can quickly grasp multiple ways to approach a problem and give commentary where necessary. I also have experience working at an alternative school as a math tutor, with students who have trouble succeeding in traditional learning environments. Furthermore, being a current student and having recently taken the GREs, much of the material is still fresh in my mind.

My learning and teaching preference is reading/writing. I adjust to students who are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. I like to use examples to drive concepts home, to make them relevant to my students' lives, and to ground these concepts in reality. Examples include, say, how geometry is used to create movie 3D special effects, or how algebra is used in sound editing in a sound studio.
