My comments on tutoring Russian : Native speaker of Russian with Master's Degrees earned in Russian and in English

I have been tutoring students of Russian for 7 years, on and off. Russian, quite frankly, is a difficult tongue to learn in adulthood, with its sprawling grammar system and many changing word endings; I believe that vocabulary generation and sentence construction are should be prioritized over grammar during early stages of learning so that student become active user of the language early on. I take every measure to help students feel active and empowered rather than overwhelmed by an alien hostile force; students are encouraged to be intuitive and creative with whatever vocabulary they have already internalized rather than be paralyzed by rigid adherence to the quite onerous grammar.

I graduated with a Business Degree, currently involved in Master's of Teaching Mathematics program. During my college I helped tutor many students with a variety of needs, mainly math and science. Consider the following scenario: Anne is taking German 101. She loves German, however has failed two of her midterms, subsequently she asked for my help. So I introduced myself to Anne and assured her that German is easy and she was capable of passing her upcoming exam. The next step I used, was to determine her learning style, I did this by asking questions about her preferences to learning. I determined that she was an auditory learner there for we made audio tape of our tutoring sessions and Anne was able to achieve her goal of passing her exam.
