The world would be a boring place if all of its people were the same. I believe each individual is socially, academically, emotionally, cognitively, and creatively developed differently from others. Some children perform better in social relationships than at written language and this is where people like me come handy to improve and help develop some of these academic domains. I believe people learn through direct experience and that an educator should focus on an individual’s needs, so a constructivist approach is my teaching style. I am patient, a good listener, who embraces diversity and is attentive.

More About This Tutor...

I started teaching tennis to juniors at the age of 16. I enjoyed that very much. For close to 10 years I taught at a country club in Connecticut. During my time there I did not focus on winning, but our record went from 0-7 to 7-0. I attribute this to the power of positive teaching. After I completed Loyola University MD, I went into B2B Corporate sales, where I was successful, but my passion remained with teaching. Recently I was a PE Coach at a school, and I started an after school program for tennis and golf for the children.
My teaching style is modeled after the Princeton Method, which is the way that I was taught to teach tennis. The Princeton method focuses on the positive. So instead of saying "don't skip the hesitation for a period mark", I would say "remember to hesitate in between sentences".

A Little Bit About Me...

All students can learn, but in different ways. I, for one, learn best by watching how something is done. I can read about it, or hear a lecture about it, but seeing it helps me understand the subject. This type of teaching would be done with movies, drawing or acting out the situation. In my teaching, I try to use all methods available to me to help the students learn and to use their creativity. I especially try to get students to work in groups and to share their work with each other. I find that pier groups provide the best help in understanding the subject matter. The classroom should be a learning place of activities and fun.

A Little Bit About Me...

At Loyola University, as director of the Writing Lab, I used peer tutoring and computers to assist students in the composition classes. I developed a love for tutoring and remediation -- for the student who needs one-on-one instruction. I allow the student to be successful. Every lesson must end in success and praise. It also helps that I have a good sense of humor and a knack for discovering each student's personal interests and melding those into the lessons. It's imperative instruction be individualized, positive and patient.
After I got my BA and Illinois secondary school certification, I pursued my MFA in Playwriting at the University of Utah. I forged a career as a writer and journalist. My liberal education in history and the arts deeply benefited me. I like to have a guide for the daily work and have specific goals every day. However, when someone is interested in a different subject, I like to explore that topic. I think it is very important to keep students alert and motivated, so I like to explore all types of learning expericences. For example, I enjoy working with the special education children, getting them to stretch and walk outside. I like to play music to them and get them to sing along. I also enjoy getting these children to create art and express themselves in short sentences, writing to match their abilties.

I do not like to teach out of textbooks. I use them primarily as resources. I prefer to create a lesson or activity that plays to the strengths of the individual child/student and challenges them on their particular level. I have found interactive lessons are very effective for all age ranges.
