My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : As an educational psychologist in various school districts I evaluated students for dyslexia. I then worked with the teachers to find the most effective way to work with these students.

I have taught in Michigan and in California. I also have credentials as a school counselor and psychologist. I have experience with all aspects of the special education system from the K through grade 12 level. This incudes testing, placement and re-evaluation and the IEP process. I also have worked at the post secondary level and am familiar with academic and financial aide requirements.
I am very aware of the necessity of adapting my teaching style to the learning modality of those I am working with. As an educator I evaluated students to define how they best process information. They may be auditory learners, visual learners or they may use a combination approaches. I am very patient and understand that everyone can learn. I believe in setting goals and evaluating progress to establish new goals when necessary.

I have a lot of experience not only in fields that you may need help learning, but I also spent time during college tutoring classmates as I was in the class and developed a style to help students learn quickly and also reinforce the concepts. I understand the student to determine the best learning style for you and I make the transformation teaching you the material in an effective manner.
I first find out your true objective for learning the material. Is it a requirement and not in your field of study so you just want to pass the class or is this a part of your passion or career and really want to know the nuts and bolts of the subject. I will adjust accordingly and make out a plan. I will also figure out the best way to teach you the material and from there we will have a plan to accomplish the targeted goal.

While I pride myself on being approachable, patient and easy going, I tend to approach teaching in a methodical manner. I believe that student's time and attention is very valuable, and warrants preparation and thoroughness. My initial approach is always to first assess a student's needs, goals, learning style, and accomplishments. Next, I pick a strategy to approach the needs of the student. For example, I might select a straight-forward text or document from which I could teach loosely, such as the book "With Good Reason". (It is an excellent text on argumentative methods.) After twenty years in the financial area I went back to school to obtain a special education credential and found a passion for teaching. While in school I worked as a teacher's aide at Seaside High School, and taught 5th grade summer school for two years.
